Francis Crick was born on June 8, 1916, in Northampton, England. He was curious to learn science and do “kitchen” experiments as a kid. At age 21, Crick earned a B.S. degree in physics in 1937 from University College, London. After that, he conducted graduate research on water viscosity. Unfortunately, World War II (1939- 1942) disrupted his research, and instead he worked in the military as a designer of magnetic and acoustic mines for the war. The war ended, Crick quit the military and continued his scientific studies. Crick was uncertain about his passion during his early graduate years. After the war, he researched the magnetism effects on chick fibroblastic cell. In 1947, he moved to Ca

STEM GLAM GALLERY: Elizabeth Blackwell

Elizabeth Blackwell was born to Hannah Lane and Samuel Blackwell in England on February 3, 1821. Since her father, a sugar refiner and quaker, wanted to participate in anti-slavery movement, the Blackwell family moved to the United States in 1931. Elizabeth was 17 years old when her father died in 1838. Initially she had no interest in the medical field and found “everything connected to the body” disgusting. So she first pursued a teaching career, which she thought was the most appropriate for women in that era. Though she never thought that she would ever read a medical book, young Blackwell was strongly inspired when her dying friend told her that she would have felt more relieved from he

Time Management Tips

Hello, everyone! I’ve organized some time management tips to help boost your productivity. There are 4 categories: Motivation, Planning, Execution and Balance. In the interest of time, let’s jump right into it! Motivation 1. Figure out your top 3 priorities in life. They could be health, career, school, family, friends, etc. No matter what these 3 priorities are, you will want to allocate some time to these aspects of your life regardless of how busy you get. These are the 3 most important things to you and you will take care of it. I also strongly recommend everyone to include health in one of your priorities (more on that later). 2. Figure out your true aspirations. The keyword here is ‘tr

The Five Stages of Immigration

“I am from there. I am from here. I am not there and I am not here. I have two names, which meet and part, and I have two languages. I forget which of them I dream in.” ― Mahmoud Darwish Immigration is a bizarre experience. You uproot every aspect of your current life and try to plant the same tree on different soil. Unlike travelling or even studying abroad, you do not get the luxury to fully appreciate the new scenery upon arrival. First, you probably have a lot of baggage. Second, you face a whole slew of problems – the million arrangements you have to make when you try to settle into a new place; for example, school registration, rent, living arrangements, etc. (If you are a kid, this pa

Charles Darwin was born into a wealthy family, in Shrewbury, Western England. Ever since he was young, he had a strong interest in nature and fond of fishing, riding, hunting, and gathering insects. His father’s (a physician) disencouragement about his interests pushed him to attend medical school. However, he eventually dropped out after realizing that the sight of blood was boring and terrifying. After that, he attended the Cambridge University, where he became a proficient naturalist. After graduation at the Christ’s college, Cambridge University, he was chosen to become a partner of ship captain, Robert FitzRoy of HMS Beagle. There, he started his epic 5-year voyage, and explored and col
